Critical Community Perspectives on Housing & Homelessness in Hamilton
On March 25, 2024, our community gathered for an impactful panel discussion on housing and homelessness in Hamilton. Led by moderator Dr. Ameil J. Joseph (Assoc. Prof., School of Social Work, Academic Director of Community-Engaged Research and Relationships, Office of Community Engagement, McMaster University), panelists Ahona Mehdi (Hamilton Encampment Support Network Steering Committee Member), Gessie Stearns (Community Researcher on Homelessness, Ph.D. student, School of Social Work, McMaster University), and Shabeeh Ahmad (Hamilton Social Medicine Response Team [HAMSMaRT]) offered valuable insights into the urgent issues surrounding housing needs, definitions of homelessness, and the framing of solutions.
Throughout the discussion, we delved into the complexities of housing challenges, challenging narratives that criminalize homelessness and perpetuate stigma. The panelists brought diverse expertise and experiences to the table, offering insights that prioritize human rights, needs, and dignity.
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this vital conversation. Your engagement is crucial as we continue working towards equitable solutions to housing in Hamilton.
