Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Honorarium Fund

The purpose of this fund is to ensure that community partners are compensated for their time when contributing to teaching and learning at McMaster University. Whether they are delivering a guest lecture, supervising a placement, or leading a workshop, community partners should be compensated for their time and expertise.

Applicants may apply for up to $200.00 per course to provide compensation to a community partner for their contributions to teaching and learning.

  • Applications received by August 31, 2026 will be processed by the first week of class. If there are funds remaining, the form will remain open and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the end of the term, or until the funds are depleted.
  • Anyone who is teaching a course (undergraduate or graduate) at McMaster University is welcome to apply to the Honorarium Fund. This includes sessional instructors, graduate teaching fellows, and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Funding must be used to compensate community partners who contribute to teaching and learning at McMaster University.
    • Funding can only be used to provide honoraria. Funding cannot be used to purchase gifts or cover expenses, including transportation, childcare, or meals.
    • Funding cannot be used to compensate other academics or university staff, unless they are speaking in a capacity that extends beyond their work at McMaster University.
    • Funding cannot be used to compensate a community partner who is already being paid for their time by their employer (e.g. an employee who does outreach and delivers a guest lecture as part of their work)
  • Priority will be given to applications for courses that count towards the Interdisciplinary Minor in Community Engagement and/or align with McMaster’s principles of community engagement.
  • Priority will be given to sessional instructors, graduate teaching fellows, and postdoctoral fellows.
  • If your application is successful, we will transfer the funds to your Department. Your Department will be responsible collecting any personal information (e.g. address, SIN, etc.) from the community partner and disbursing funds.

Prior to applying, please consult with your Department to see if there are funds available for honoraria.
For panels or Q&A sessions, we recommend an honorarium of $50.00 per participant. For guest lectures that require prep time, consider an honorarium of $100.00 to $200.00 based on the length of the lecture and the nature of the topic.
