Community-Campus Catalyst Grant

McMaster’s Office of Community Engagement is making up to $10,000 available to McMaster University faculty, staff, students and their community partners through the Community-Campus Catalyst Grant Fund. These funds will be available in amounts of up to $1000 each.

The goal of the Community-Campus Catalyst Fund is to support new partnerships that align with the goals of McMaster's Community Engagement strategy. Reflecting this goal, proposals that involve collaborative projects with community partners working towards mutual benefit ​and pursuing outcomes aligned with McMaster's community engagement goals and objectives will be prioritized for funding. Funding cannot be applied towards equipment, conference travel, or ongoing initiatives.

Any application must be developed as a community-campus partnership and must include:

  • At least one community partner
  • At least, but not limited to, one of the following:
    • faculty member
    • staff member
    • student

This fund has been developed to support the following partnerships:

  • new community-campus partnerships
  • partnerships in the early stages of development

Proposal Details

Colleagues interested in these funds are asked to submit a proposal that includes specific mention of how the proposed idea:

  1. Aligns with McMaster’s community engagement strategy vision, goals, and objectives
  2. Aligns with at least one of the theme areas of focus for McMaster’s Office of Community Engagement—Poverty & Inclusion, Healthy Spaces & Communities, Access & Knowledge Sharing, and Economic Development.
  3. Aligns with at least one of the following areas: community-engaged research, community-engaged education, or service/volunteerism.
  4. Encourages collaboration between community partners, faculty members, staff, and students .
  5. Has clear goals and anticipated outcomes.
  6. Consider’s McMaster’s action-oriented principles of community engagement.

Proposals must be submitted in a single document to community@mcmaster.ca by 5:00pm on Friday April 7, and must include the following details:

  • Title
  • McMaster Principal Applicant (Name, Unit or Department, and Contact Information)
  • Community Co-Applicant (Name, Partner Organization, and Contact Information))
  • Additional Collaborators (as appropriate)
  • Theme Area alignment: Please note the theme area(s) that the project aligns with (e.g. Healthy Spaces & Communities)
  • Project Goals (150 words)
  • Description of Proposed Activity (300 words)
  • Anticipated Timeline (150 words)
  • Alignment with McMaster’s Community Engagement Strategy (200 words)
  • Anticipated Outputs and Outcomes (200 words)
  • Budget (included within the proposal document)

Any work funded by this catalyst must be completed by April 30, 2018. Grantees will be expected to submit a short project report (5 pages max) by May 31, 2018 and will be expected to present their projects at the June 2018 Idea Exchange.

Proposals are due by the end of the day on Friday April 7.

They will then be evaluated by the Office of Community Engagement with a response sent to applicants by no later than May 15, 2017. Successful applicants will also be encouraged to share their project idea at the June 2017 Idea Exchange.
